- The problem is most likely due to the phone lines or the phone
- companies switching equipment. Consider this: I own a Supra 28.8k.
- If I call the local number of my old ISP, I can connect at no faster
- than 21.6 (most of the time it is at 19.2). If I call the number that
- is local to the provider (a toll call for me), I can connect at 24k.
- The modems I am dialing into are the same -- just the route has
- changed.
-
- My new ISP is only a few miles away from me. I connect at 26.4k most
- of the time and occasionally at 28.8k. I am quite happy with these
- speeds.
-
- I have been told that the phone companies are reluctant to improve the
- line noise as they would prefer to sell you a digital line, but it
- doesn't hurt to give ma-bell a call.
-
- BTW, I tried out (and returned) three other 28.8k modems prior to the
- Supra, which outperformed them all. I use the factory default init.
- string for PC's.
